The rockstar lifestyle and Congress seemingly have little to do with each other: One lives in a seamy underworld fueled by illicit sex, payola and hairspray, while the other is mostly about music. Still, what’s more rock-n-roll than greed and questionable bookkeeping? Nothing.
Dirty Bomb will prove this timeless connection at Journopalooza with the first public performance of selections from “The Power and the Glory,” their original concept album chronicling the rise and fall of D.C. superlobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Painstakingly crafted in drummer Matt Tebo’s backyard studio, “The Power and the Glory” will probably see the light of day sometime during the second Palin administration. Until then, Journopalooza will be one of the few places to hear songs like “Phantoms,” about the magic behind the appropriations process, or “Lincoln Town Car,” a musical homage to the favored ride of DC’s chattering class. (Dirty Bomb, for the record, takes the bus.)
Songwriter/guitarist Andy Sullivan covers Congress for Reuters. The Onion praised one of his musical compositions as “probably the only song ever written about the raw animal sexuality of former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan.” He’ll be joined by Reuters Fed correspondent Mark Felsenthal on guitar and Kat Jackson, a Reuters TV producer, on vocals. Bassist Jeff Muller has played with notables like Eva Cassidy, Allen Toussaint and Cyril Neville. Drummer Matt Tebo, a software ninja with security clearance, has performed with REM’s Mike Mills and a slew of local legends.
Andy, Matt and Jeff also play in an ’80s cover band, Awesome Incorporated, that would love to service your private function.
